This is a story about you. Not any old story of simple dallies or even a strong adventure to where you find yourself. No, this is a story about how you met a boy with a destiny that you- unknowingly were supposed to assist and how out of it all- you met someone to admire.

This story begins with you sitting and staring at the sky, admiring the surrounding scenery with eyes bright. You were alone. You had just come to this city, once again hoping to find the recipients of a treasure your mother gave you. Well, quite the contrary- your father gave it to you but it was addressed from your dead mother. Apparently she had been given the item when she was pregnant by a very beautiful woman. It was requested of her to return the item to the woman after some twenty years but since she died almost a year after having you, she could not fulfill her promise. Now you were doing it in her stead, searching high and low for this woman.

Problem was- you had no idea where she could be nor what she looked like. All that your mother left you with was that she was a person who filled your heart with happiness upon sight and lit the world around her. That was all.

“Oh mother...I can swear that- by now- I have searched everywhere. Traveled everywhere and yet....I still can’t find her. How am I supposed to keep your promise if I don’t know what I’m doing?” You asked the air, a frown upon your lips as you stairs up at the afternoon clouds. You looked to the item beside you and sighed, lifting the heavy object into your lap. Oh this was a difficult thing. Not once had you ever unwrapped it. It was tempting most of the time but you never wanted to disrespect your mother or the recipient.

In truth, it looked like an instrument of some sort. It was heavier at the bottom but had a slim neck. Whether or not it was a handle was a mystery. You shook your head quickly, hair catching air before looking back up. “...I trust you though. Plus, I feel like I’m close this time! I feel like I might actually find who you want me to.” You said with a new smile to express your enthusiasm.

“Oh! I didn’t know anyone else came up here- well not anymore at least.” A voice said, your nerves getting the best of you. You spun quite quickly, the slick mud under foot causing you to not only drop the item but slip over it as well- straight into the pond you were admiring earlier.

    “Ah!”

“Oops! Sorry!” The voice said and it was join by squelching steps. And not a second later a boy appeared in your vision. He offered out a hand to you, allowing you to grab it and lift yourself up as best as you could with his height. “I didn’t mean to scare you. You okay?” He asked, stepping back once you were standing and rubbing water from your eyes.

“uh....y-yeah I’m fine...I just didn’t expect you to pop out of nowhere.” You said, blinking your eyes open to inspect the offender. He was a cheeky boy, sporting a red shirt with a star over his chest. He was staring at you with wide eyes, a guitar in his hand. “Really, I’m okay.” You said, a slight smile on your lips. He was kind of adorable.

“Oh good. But, who were you talking to?” He asked, looking around as though he might find someone timidly hiding behind a nearby tree. You almost had the urge to laugh to yourself in embarrassment but you scratched your cheek and looked back to the mossy water which you realized you were still standing in and walked back to dryer land. “Actually, I was....well I was talking to no one. Metaphorically you could say I was talking to my mother.” You stated, picking up the item and stringing the heavy thing on your back.

“Your mom? Where is she?” The boy asked, looking back to you when he found no one.

“Well....gone if you know what I mean. Died when I was young. Hey- before you get into anything else personal, what is your name young man?” You asked, crossing your arms in a mock irritance.

“Steven! Your turn.” He said sitting down with an expectant smile. You chuckled in turn and sat as well.

“My name is ______. Nice to meet you.”

“So you lost your mom?” Steven asked immediately. “When??”

“Uh....I don’t- like....maybe a year after I was born?” You stated, looking at him. You weren’t all that sure why he was immediately interested in your dead mom or why you were telling him. Maybe it was just in the heat of the moment. Or maybe it was really because you felt the need to tell a kid like him. It was a strange feeling since you couldn’t quite place why.

“You’re just like me!” Steven said, scooting closer with his large eyebrows risen. “My mom- uh...sort of died having me.” He stated, sitting by you now. Maybe that was why you told him. A personal feeling of connection?

But you did want to ask on something that caught your attention. “Sort of?” You asked, looking down at him with a light heart.

“Yeah....it’s sort of a long story though.” He replied with which you nodded in return. You knew the “long story” excuse though in this case though, you weren’t sure if he didn’t want to tell you because it was uncomfortable to talk about or if it really was just a long story.

“Well then...what brings you to this place, Steven?” It was something you felt would change the subject just in case.

“My mom used to come here for the moss. She helped it bloom. I like to come here sometimes too” You heard Steven say, his voice still a chipper tone. “What about you? I don’t think I’ve ever seen you around before. Are you new to Beach City?”

You switched your gaze from Steven back to the mossy pond. “Yeah...I’m only here for a little while though. I came to find someone-- but I got distracted here. It was calming.” You stated, patting the item leaning on the back of your shoulder. “I have to deliver this thing to them.”

“Who are you looking for?” Steven asked, his face lit as though he may be able to help you in someway. You pursed your lips, thinking a while. He might be able to help but it would most likely be leading you around to see people. How should you tell Steven that you didn’t even know who this was going to? With a sigh, you crossed your legs uncertainly, an arm supporting your chin on one knee.

“I....don’t know.” You said lowly, playing with the dirt in front of your hidden feet.

“You don’t know?!” Steven said, looking at you in disbelief. “How do you not know who you’re supposed be delivering to? Does it not have a label? No address or name?” He asked,  inspecting the heavy object on your back from where he was. It enticed a chuckle from you, such little things like checking something you checked a million times, funny.

“Nope. My mom wanted me to deliver it for her. I never knew her but my father told me she made a promise. Whatever it is- she was supposed to return it to the lady who gave it to her in twenty five years.” You stated, wiggling your feet below your crossed legs.

“So...no name?” Steven asked, sitting back with a small plop.

    “Nope” you replied

    “No address?”

    “Nope”

“...and nothing for what she looks like....?”

    “Nope...”

And then it was quiet. Steven seemed at a loss, thinking quietly where he sat by you. You had already gone over what he was probably thinking many times before. In fact, when your father gave it to you at age nineteen you were so confused you had left it alone for nearly a year. But after a success in your career and then some you had found the package again and realized- that it was extremely important to not only your mother but you as well.

It was a tranquil silence. The sun was shining through the tree tops, the open area above the mossy pond flooding light. It was definitely peaceful. And then-

    “Wait! How about-!”

“Steven!” A voice came from behind you both. Both heads whipped around at the call eyes wide from being startled. It was a larger woman, running toward you both with two others trailing after. They stopped just by Steven, standing tall and magnificent. They were a marvel.

Steven hopped up, the little guitar in his hands held carefully. “Garnet? What’s going on?” He asked, taking a moment to glance at your curious frame before his attention was once again back to the marvelous women.

“A Parasitic Gem monster is going to make an appearance soon. We need to find it before it can causes any damage.” the more petite, pale character stated.

“Yeah! Apparently it can, like- take over people’s minds and stuff!” Said the stout purple one with a wave of her arms.

“We need to move now. Are you coming with us?” The taller and more bulked one said, a droning voice serious and action ready. You were lost. You didn’t know where to start comprehending the people in front of you and just sort of stared. The regality of the group was more of what captivated you. More so the broad one than the rest.

Steven turned to you, looking as though he shouldn’t be leaving you. Luckily enough, you gathered up enough of your mind to wave him off. “Just go ahead. Nice to meet you though, Steven.” You said, watching him smile before running off with the three women. Of course, he was waving the entire time so it wasn’t entirely a surprise that he tripped and was luckily caught by the larger woman in a swift movement.

The moment with Steven seemed so quick. It almost registered in your mind that it never actually happened. But you continued to watch them disappear, standing up. You hoisted the object on your back to a better position and set down after them, hoping to find who you were looking for in the town. If not, you would once again have to continue to another town.

But...Your life was an unfortunate mess. You were graced so generously with bad luck and worse- there were others who wanted what was on your back. And these people were persistent and unfriendly. A combination that has near meant your life on many occasions.
